Mike Watson

Mike Watson was Elise Makani’s abusive first husband and the biological father of Amber Makani and Jace Makani. His abuse of Elise and the children culminated on October 18, 2045, when he assaulted Amber and pushed Jace down the steps outside his Baltimore home, causing a traumatic brain injury.

Behavior

Mike used intimidation, degradation, and physical violence against Elise and the children. He treated Jace’s sensitivity with contempt and directed racist and fatphobic remarks toward Mo Makani, whose close relationship with the children he resented. He also attempted to provoke Mo into physical confrontations.

Mike’s abuse of Elise included emotional and physical violence. He eventually left her and the children for another woman after several months of physically assaulting Elise.

Elise Makani

Mike was Elise’s first husband. Their relationship began before Amber’s February 2034 birth. Their marriage was abusive, and Elise later separated from him while trying to protect Amber and Jace. After the October 2045 assault, she obtained sole custody, and Mike’s visitation ended.

Amber Makani

Mike was Amber’s biological father. On October 18, 2045, Amber challenged his racist and fatphobic remarks about Mo. Mike slapped her, and she called 911 after Jace was injured while intervening.

Jace Makani

Mike was Jace’s biological father. He subjected Jace to emotional and physical abuse and repeatedly demeaned his gentle temperament.

During a visitation weekend, Jace addressed him as “Mike” after calling Mo “Dad.” Mike later phoned Elise, accused her and Mo of turning the children against him—“You’ve poisoned them, Elise”—and complained that Jace had had an attitude all evening. Elise told him that Jace had chosen his own words and that Mo had never pressured the children to call him anything.

During the October 2045 assault, Jace punched Mike after Mike struck Amber. Mike grabbed and shoved him hard enough that he fell down the porch steps and struck his head on concrete. Jace also dislocated his left shoulder and broke his collarbone. He seized and aspirated while Amber was speaking to the emergency dispatcher, remained in a natural coma for nine days, and developed lasting neurological disabilities from the severe traumatic brain injury.

Mo Makani

Mike repeatedly targeted Mo with racist and fatphobic language. An earlier confrontation at the Weston-Rivera home escalated until Charlie Rivera ordered Mike to leave and threatened to call the police if he returned.

During Mike’s first meeting with Mo, he mocked Mo’s Hawaiian Creole and “island-boy accent.” When Mike returned unannounced later in 2036, he called Mo a “live-in houseboy,” made a racist remark about coconuts, and argued after Charlie ordered him out. Charlie switched to Spanish while condemning Mike’s treatment of Mo and Elise; Mike told him to speak English. Charlie barred him from the property, and Logan ordered him out after Charlie began vomiting and shaking from the confrontation’s physical toll.

Police detained Mike after the October 18, 2045 assault. A preliminary police record Mo accessed listed domestic violence, assault of a minor, assault causing serious bodily injury, endangerment, and resisting arrest among the allegations against him. Mike was later imprisoned for the attack.

Mike later protested Amber and Jace’s plans to change their surname and claimed that he was the victim of parental alienation. The public 911 recording and documented assault contradicted his account. Elise obtained sole custody, and Mike lost direct access to the family.
